Information on India
Currently, India has the second-most strongly expanding national economy, right after China. In spite of this, more than 50 % of its population have less than 2 US$ per day to live on. Regarding many social indicators, India is even below the values of Sub-Saharan Africa. The country is characterised by extreme economic and social contradictions. 92 % of the working population belong in the informal sector and therefore usually have no formal security regarding sickness, accident, harvest or other risks. This is why about 70 % of health costs in India has to be shouldered by the individual persons concerned. Social security is mostly covered by traditional informal systems (extended family, village community). These security systems are, however, changing, and their function is loosing effectiveness. India faces the challenge of creating the framework conditions for new forms of social security.
